Wii Fit for Brain Injury

It’s all the rage – Wii Fit, that is. I'm not advertizing for Nintendo, but we have found Wii Fit is a great additional tool for dealing with the various aspects of brain injury. We call it recreation therapy.

I will let you know from the beginning of this blog that it is not cheap. However, I can also tell you Larry and I think purchasing a Wii was a very good decision. When we bought our console, Wii Fit was nowhere to be found. They had not been out long and were on back-order with all the distributors we contacted.

Wii Sports was included with the console we finally bought. That’s what hooked us. We have finally been able to order Wii Fit and can’t wait to get it! We currently play Wii Sports almost every night for a couple of hours. It gets us off our butts and we don’t feel so guilty when watching TV later.

I don’t want this to sound like an advertisement for Nintendo products, but I do want to get the word out to those of you who are looking for a different, fun way to get some exercise. Getting exercise is a great way to deter or actually remove depression. I know it works and I can tell the difference in my overall attitude when I don’t get enough exercise. While I was at the brain injury rehabilitation facility, a strength training and aerobics program was part of my daily activities. I especially liked the treadmill since I felt I could take that time to just think about anything. Nobody was asking me questions and stressing me out. It was my time alone. When I returned home after my stay there, Larry bought a treadmill. He uses it too; and, we are actually on our second one since we wore out the first one after several years.

There are, of course, many other ways to get mentally and physically fit. One of the keys to being successful with your program is to enjoy it as much as possible and make sure you don’t get bored. That’s one of the reasons I think the Wii is a great addition to our physical and mental activities.

Oh, one more thing I want to tell you – Larry also bought the Wii Big Brain Academy. It has great mental games with different levels of difficulty. They challenge your brain, but make you feel good about your progress while encourageing you when you don’t do so well.

I said that was the last thing; but, I want to make sure I tell you about the Wii Sports games we’ve been playing. Some of our favorites are:

Bowling – Did you know if you get three strikes in a row, you get a turkey? I didn’t – but guess what, I did that!

Tennis – We’re getting better. We haven’t played it as much as the others yet, but we get tremendous exercise playing this one.

Golf – You get a different kind of exercise with this one. It’s challenging, fun, and I have learned so much about golf. I’d say this one definitely provides both mental and physical challenges.

Boxing – We’ve just started to get into this one. I’m enjoying it since it brings back memories of when I was active in Taekwondo as a black belt prior to my anoxic brain injury. It’s rather dangerous to spar when you no longer have peripheral vision!

Whatever you choose to do, stay active both mentally and physically. If you’re interested in the Wii, you can find information on Wii stuff at our Brain Store in the Brain Games section.
