One thing I am thankful for always, but am particularly reminded of during this time of year, is my family. They have all been completely supportive and encouraging from day one. Without them, I would have been left to self-destruct during the early stages of my anoxic brain injury which occurred after a routine surgery while in the hospital.
I know I am particularly blessed to have the support of not only my immediate family, but my extended one as well. But, it is easy to take them for granted, especially in the beginning since it is natural for someone who has suffered an acquired brain injury to adopt the “it’s all about me” attitude (or the denial phase). We can really try the patience of those who love us. If you find your family is not yet ready to be that support you need, there are several other avenues available to you such as brain injury support groups.
I joke with Larry about him being a “Virgo” while I am a “Taurus”. With Virgo’s being “givers” and Taurus’ being “takers”, we were definitely meant for each other. He just didn’t realize when we got married how much giving and taking would be involved. I’m trying to improve in that area though. He’s the love of my life and I am so thankful for him. I’ve said it at least a million times, but I would not be where I am today after the acquired brain injury if not for his love, devotion, and tenacity to find help for me. Anyone with brain injury needs at least one person in their life they can count on no matter what.

So as the leaves change colors and the air becomes cool and crisp (in my area), I hope you will take a minute to think about who you are thankful for that has helped you during your struggle to find yourself again after experiencing the devastation of acquired brain injury. Whether yours was an anoxic brain injury like mine, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) acquired as a soldier and creating a war that never ends, or whether it was caused from a violent accident of some other kind, a stroke, or any other of the many types of brain injuries, surly you have at least one person in your life that has stood by you and encouraged you to Never Give Up. That is definitely something to be thankful for
