The holiday season is upon us and I have managed to finally complete my Christmas shopping. I always want to choose just the right gift for each person on our list and having had an anoxic brain injury makes the task a bit more challenging. Not being able to make decisions is one of the most common symptoms of this type of brain injury. So you can see my dilemma.
Since you’re reading this article, you are probably a brain injury survivor – a victim of TBI, anoxic brain injury, stroke, or some other type of acquired brain injury. There are many types. Or, perhaps you are a survivor as a husband, wife, child, or parent of someone who has suffered a brain injury. If the later, you may be trying to come up with just the right gift for that loved one this holiday season.
I have a few suggestions. This list represents gifts that would be enjoyed by most anyone, but would especially benefit someone who is working on making their life more manageable and fulfilling after brain injury. The list of gifts represents variable price ranges. Several of the suggestions help with memory problems since most brain injury victims need these strategies.
A Daily Journal – a place to write down their thoughts & important information

A Daily Journal – a place to write down their thoughts & important information
Brain Injury Books
A Picture Album – helps to recall people and events
An MP3 player – listening to music is therapeutic
Exercise Equipment – physical exercise is also relaxing and healthy
Brain Stimulating Games - such as Big Brain Academy for the Wii by Nintendo
Materials for a Hobby – if they have expressed a particular interest

Create a Cookbook with easy recipies
Hopefully, you will find some of the above ideas helpful, but here are a few gifts I know would be appreciated. Appreciation of these gifts may not be immediately obvious, but over time you may be able to see what a wonderful gift they are for someone who is a brain injury survivor. I started to say they are FREE. But, they are far from it. They are intangible, but these gifts are very precious and valuable to both the brain and the soul.
Patience
Encouragement
Love
Willingness to allow a level of independence
Security
May you have the best holiday season ever!
