Connections after Brain Injury

Last week I awoke to Larry telling me our network router was not working properly and I was not going to be able to connect to the internet. Fortunately, after Larry did his magic to fix it, I was back in business as if nothing ever happened. UNfortunately, that result is rarely possible when brain injury occurs and connections to the various areas of the brain are severed.

For instance, after certain types of acquired brain injury, relationships are affected. There are broken connections to family, friends, co-workers, and the outside world in general. And then, there are the connections to the various parts of the brain as well. You even lose the connection to yourself. By that I mean you don’t even know yourself anymore.

One does not realize how marvelous the brain is until vital parts are lost. People go along in life damaging their brain with various types of drugs (including prescription drugs), minor car accidents, sports injuries or other falls, etc.; not realizing they have done some damage to their brain. Thankfully, many times the brain repairs itself and life goes on with that person never really knowing.

In the case of a major accident or injury, the brain may not be unable to repair itself over time. The damage is too great. However, after such brain injuries, it may be possible for the brain to re-route to other areas within the brain to accomplish the same tasks. Using compensatory strategies can help survivors live a happy and productive life after brain injury. There are also brain injury rehabilitation facilities which teach some of these strategies. These and others can also be found in Brain Injury Survivor’s Guide as well as online at Brain Injury Guide and Brain Injury Online.

Yes, various connections are severed after brain injury. Although it’s not as easy as going out to purchase a replacement part or changing the connection to the router, there’s no reason to think it is a hopeless situation. Connections can be restored after brain injury - with family, friends and co-workers as well as the outside world.
