One of the unfortunate results that generally accompany a brain injury is unemployment. Some people are eventually able to return to employment while others never do. I was one of the fortunate survivors who returned to work for my former employer. Even after therapy, because of my anoxic brain injury, there were some activities I could not do as well as before. That eventually presented an opportunity for me that I would not have sought prior to my brain injury.
I recognize that my situation is not common for most brain injury victims and wanted to share an article that might be helpful and encouraging to those looking for new employment, especially those who are learning to live with their new brain.
The name of the article (squidoo lens) is Who Stole My Cheese. The article references a book entitled Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson, M.D. , and it points out how opportunities are all around us – even in places we might never think to look. It was encouraging for me to read when I was one of many victims of a corporate layoff a couple of years ago and was unemployed for months. And, I think it is a good read for anyone who needs to be encouraged after a job loss regardless of the reason, but especially after brain injury.
