Brain Injury Vision Loss

Well, it’s that time of year again – at least if you live in the part of the country where I do. My sons, along with a gillan other hunters, have begun their annual preparations for deer hunting. Although I know there are “logical” explanations for keeping the population under control, I still can’t stand the thought of those beautiful animals being killed.

My drive to work now takes me down a stretch of interstate that can be especially dangerous this time of year. Certain areas of it are surrounded by woods and there is a very real possibility of seeing deer on the side of the road any time of year, but especially during hunting season. My fear is that one will run into the highway and, because of my lack of peripheral vision, I will not see it in time to try to avoid hitting it with my car. If you’ve read Brain Injury Survivor’s Guide, you know I have a small convertible. Needless to say, it would not be pretty – a phrase one of my good friends would use. If you haven’t read the book, you can buy and online copy and find out what everyone should know about brain injury.

Driving with tunnel vision is dangerous. I think I am a careful driver and I continually scan the area around me for possible dangers as I drive. However, I know the lack of peripheral vision does increase the possibility that I will have an accident. Coming home in the late afternoon now adds to the danger since it is getting dark and will be by the time I get home. And, that’s if it’s a clear night and not raining, snowing, icy, etc. Just between you and me – I say a little prayer every morning before I pull out of the driveway. Life goes on and you have to do what you have to do.

Early on, one of the things that frustrated me most about my brain injury was the lack of peripheral vision. I have learned to live with it and to use compensatory strategies to compensate for my losses. Sometimes, I even forget about it – but that can be dangerous -- especially when driving.
